Two people are dead after a murder suicide in Aurora.

Police first received a 911 call around 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, asking them to respond to 1642 Oak Drive in Aurora.

The 911 call came from a neighbor, who had received a call from a resident of that home asking that they call 911 to get help there immediately. Police say that call to the neighbor came from 74-year-old John Proudfoot.

From an open door in the garage, law enforcement personnel could see what appeared to be a male body on the couch in the living room. Upon entry, officers discovered two deceased individuals on the couch, together, and both appeared to have suffered gunshot wounds.

The scene was processed by Aurora-Marionville Police Department detectives, who say the preliminary investigation suggests that John shot and killed his wife, 67-year-old Lowona Kay Madore-Proudfoot, with a .38 revolver before then taking his own life.

The revolver along with other evidence from the scene was collected. The remains of Mr. and Mrs. Proudfoot were turned over to the Lawrence County Coroner, Scott Lakin, and autopsies are scheduled for later this week.

This investigation is ongoing and a motive for this tragedy has not yet been determined.

Chief of Police Wes Coatney says their thoughts and prayers are with the family during this extremely difficult time.
